Week of June 22
Hello 7A, 7B and 7C,
This is it - this last math lesson of the year. It's just a few more lessons for the Measurement Unit and one last quiz. If you didn't do so well on last week's quiz, I strongly encourage you to attend the last office hour of the year (this Wednesday at 1:30).
If I don't see you this week at a virtutal meeting, I wish you a wonderful summer and hope you'll visit room 18 next year :)

Week of June 15
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C,
We're beginning a new unit - Surface Area and Volume. This week there are 3 lessons AND a quiz. If possible, you can print some grid paper for drawings of 3D shapes and nets. I've provided the link within the lessons. If you don't have a printer, it's no problem. Just try your best to draw your responses neatly on your lined paper.
You'll be using your final duotang (number 4). If it's not still in your locker, then please put your notes and completed homework questions in the tab labelled "Fractions". Remember, these are yours and do not need to be shared with me (just like I wouldn't normally check over homework if we were in the classroom).
As always, if you need help, visit me during my office hours on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-2:30.

Week of June 8
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C!
We're continuing with Fractions this week. I've prepared 3 new lessons. There is no quiz this week, but you can expect one next week. Remember quizzes are due by Friday at 3:30
Remember to keep copying all of the notes (what you see is what I would write on the board and in class, you'd be expected to copy these onto lined paper) and put them into your duotang (we're in #4 now).
Students with questions can email me and visit me at my office hours on Wednesday and Friday at 1:30-2:30.

Week of June 1
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C!
We're continuing with Fractions this week. I've prepared 2 new lessons and a check-in quiz. This time, some questions have more than one correct answer and you'll need to click all the correct answers in order to get the question right. For example, if the answer is 1/2, and 3/6 is also an option, then click them both because they are equivalent.

Week of May 25
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C,
We're beginning a new unit - Fraction Operations. This week there are 3 lessons, including some interactive lessons using pattern blocks. If possible, I'd like you to print some triangle dot paper to record your answers to one of the lessons. I've provided the link within the lessons. If you don't have a printer, it's no problem. Just try your best to draw your responses neatly on your lined or grid paper.

Week of May 19
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C,
I hope you enjoyed your long weekend, despite all the rain we had yesterday. I hope you've been keeping up with the math work I've been assigning. Remember, you can work at your own pace, but try not to fall behind. I'm trying to ensure that you develop many of the skills you'll need for grade 8, despite the limitations placed on us because of distance learning.
This week's work includes an optional part that can show you how algebra can be used in the real world. Don't forget to file your notes and homework answers in your duotangs and remember that you are expected to show your work including all the steps, just as you would in class.
As always, if you need help, visit me during my office hours on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-2:30.

Week of May 11
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C!
I hope you've been doing your math work so far. We're continuing this week with isolating the variable in order to solve for x. This time, the focus will be on equations with multiplication and division. You'll start the week with another brief quiz. Please complete it before doing the rest of the lessons - I am keeping track of your results of these quizzes. This work is due by Friday. Remember, you do NOT need to share the completed homework answers with me. If you need any help, remember I'm available for help during my office hours. It was so nice to connect with so many of you last week :) and I hope that you found it helpful to work with me live.

Week of May 4
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C!
I hope you were able to access and complete last week's math lessons and homework, including the quiz I posted. I've recorded the marks of these quiz results and made adjustments for question 2 (some of you got the correct answer, but the program marked it wrong, but I've fixed that error).
This week there are 3 more lessons. Once you are done your work, you DO NOT need to share it with me. These are YOUR notes (just like you don't give me your homework when we're in school). Don't forget to keep your notes organized in your duotangs. If you have left your duotangs in your locker, then just keep your notes ordered, dated so when you get your duotangs back, you can put your notes back into them, in the correct tabs.
If you have trouble, be sure to join my office hours on Wednesday or Friday at 1:30. Details about my office hours will be sent to your emails on Wednesday morning.

Week of April 20
Hello 7A, 7B, and 7C. This week, we'll start more regular math lessons. You can find all of your math lessons linked here each week. The lessons will set up similar to they are in school with terms, examples, and homework questions assigned. For each lesson, I want you to copy the notes (or print them) and then complete the assigned questions. I've also suggestioned (optional) additional questions, if you want more practice or have extra time. Then, put them into your duotang and the same organized way that we do in class. This is the start of a new unit - Variables, Expressions and Equations (be sure to put your notes into the correct tab in the correct duotang).
There will be 3 lessons this week, including 1 which is review only. Once you are done your work, you DO NOT need to share it with me. These are YOUR notes (just like you don't give me your homework when we're in school).

Week of April 13
Once again, math this week will be in the form of 2 math prompts on your Digital Journal. Your homeroom teachers are sharing the Digital Journal link with you. Please be sure make a copy of it for your drive and rename it "YOUR NAME - Digital Journal April 13"
When you are done, share it with your homeroom teacher (7A will send to me, 7B, 7C, and HSP will submit it through their teacher's Google Classroom). If you are unsure of how to complete the math questions, please join me for my office hours on Wednesday at 1:30-2:30. I will not be hosting Office Hours on Friday this week because I'm observe Good Friday (I celebrate Easter this coming weekend). I'll send you a reminder about my office hours on Wednesday morning.

Week of April 6
We'll be starting distance learning this week. This is both exciting and a bit scary. I assure you, we're going to begin very slowly and I'll be walking you through the format every step of the way.
Everyone will begin on Monday morning with a Google Meet with their homeroom teacher. I'll only be sharing my meeting link with 7A students (please check your emails) on Sunday. The meeting will take place on Monday at 10:00 am, so be sure you've had your breakfast and gotten dressed before joining our meeting. Ahead of time, you'll need to check with your parents so that you can get your hands on some tech (phone, tablet, laptop) for 10:00 am - please don't be late. If it's not possible to join because you don't have access to tech, please email me in advance.
Check out the etiquette of participating in a Google Meet before joining the meeting (you will need to log in through your TDSB account):

At our 7A meeting I will:
- take attendance
- touch base and check that you're all alright
- tell you about this week's lesson format, where you can pick up the work, and how you can submit your responses
- tell you when I'm available to help you with your work
Though I'll be available to help students in 7B and 7C for math during my drop in office hours, my Monday Meet will be for 7A students only. As always, you can also reach me by email.
Week of March 23
I know we're all new at this and that this is very challenging, but we'll get through this. We're living through historic times and years from now we'll still be talking about the time when we had to stay home from school due to a worldwide pandemic.
Originally I told you that we will begin a new assignment on Monday April 6. If we do return to the school on the 6th, please ensure that you are prepared with graph paper, a ruler and a protractor. I won't be assigning any specific work for these next 2 weeks, but I do expect you to play some online math games or activities. Spend some time each day to practice your skills. Here is a list of a few you can choose from:
Prodigy
https://www.prodigygame.com/
Click on "New Student"
Enter class code " F7EE12"
Follow the prompts to create your account (use your TDSB email)
Begin playing
Free Rice
https://freerice.com/
No sign-up is needed. The game self-adjusts to keep the player challenged, but not frustrated. By clicking on the menu (at the top left corner of the screen) students can choose basic math and pre-algebra (which will be our next unit, incidentally).
Khan Academy
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-seventh-grade-math
Choose a skill to master and begin working.

Week of March 2
We'll have our Math Unit Test on Monday. Beginning on Tuesday, we'll start our next unit (2D Geometry); you'll need to bring your next duotang and a protractor to class.
Week of February 24
In math this week, we'll look at a few ways to subtract integers. You'll also have a review in preparation for your unit test next week.
MMQ Results - February 19
If you scored less than 70%, we'll figure out where you went wrong and how to correct your errors :) This week's retakes will take place in class.
If you're noticing that it's loading the results from last week, refresh and try again. You know that you've got the most up to date results if the date on the page is the 22nd.

Week of February 17
I hope you enjoyed your long weekend!
This week, we'll look at how to handle adding integers using a method called regrouping. You'll have an MMQ on Wednesday too.
This week, we'll look at how to handle adding integers using a method called regrouping. You'll have an MMQ on Wednesday too.
Week of February 10
This week is all about adding integers. Before the strike, I showed you one strategy for adding, but it is limiting. Can you think of why we wouldn't use this strategy all the time? I'll show you another way to add numbers that are further from zero. You will not be having an MMQ this week, but expect one the following week.

Week of January 20
As you know, classes will be cancelled on Monday.
This week, we'll look at a strategy for metric conversion and you'll have the opportunity to create a "cheat card" with the Metric Conversion staircase on it. In class, I'll walk you through how to use it. You will be allowed to use it during tests, so please remember to bring it with you for your MMQ on Wednesday.
The rest of week will focus on irregular (often called complex) shapes and strategies to find area and perimeter for them. Our week will end with an introduction to a group project.

MMQ Results - January 15
I was having problems last night with this site, so I apologize for not being able to post last night. I'm not sure what went wrong, but it seems to be working this morning. I'll also print and post the results at school.
Week of January 13
We've started a new unit on 2D Measurement. We've already reviewed perimeter and area of shapes such as rectangle, triangle, and parallelogram. I also introduced trapezoids and we worked out the formula for calculating area. Please have it memorized for Monday morning. You'll be having your next MMQ on Wednesday.
Week of December 16
It's our last week of 2019! We're wrapping up Patterning before we go on holidays. You'll get 2 more days of class time to work on your y=mx+b poster assignment before it's due on Wednesday. You'll also get one day of review and then a Unit Test on Thursday. If you're leaving for the break before Thursday, speak to me so that we can arrange when you can hand these assessments in.
Week of December 9
This week, it's all about algebraic expressions of linear relationships. First I'll show you how to represent a pattern using a scatterplot. I expect labelled graphs and axes, with straight lines, and accurate intervals. This should be review, but I'll go through it in detail as if it's the first time you're seeing it. Then, I'll spend an entire day just teaching you the step-by-step way to determine the expression. Then we'll spend the rest of the week practicing what we've learned. You might find it quite challenging at first, but the more you practice it, the easier it will become.
There will not be an MMQ this week, though at the end of the week, I'll introduce an assignment which will be due next Wednesday.

MMQ Results - December 2nd
The retake will be tomorrow at lunch for students with a score below 70%. Don't forget to bring your food!
Week of December 2
You'll be having an MMQ on Monday this week. Later this week, you'll have an in-class assignment to be completed and submitted same day, which will be graded.
We'll be continuing with Patterning and this will include using table of values to predict the nth term.

Week of November 25
We'll be starting a new unit on Monday - Patterning. Please bring your 2nd duotang and be sure to have some lined and graph paper inside.
This week we'll explore some cool patterns in numbers, like Pascal's triangle and the Fibonacci Sequence. There will not be an MMQ this week.
Please don't forget to bring your signed math unit tests on Monday (the ones Miss G handed back on Friday).

Week of November 11
I hope you've enjoyed your weekend.
This week in math, we'll look at spreadsheets and databases using the laptops in order to sort and display data. We'll even learn how to create graphs using Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel.
Your MMQ will be on Tuesday and will include everything we've done so far this unit. Later this week, we'll look at Stem and Leaf Plots and review Measures of Central Tendancies (mean, median, and mode).

Week of November 4
You know that you've got a Unit Test on Monday. On Friday we played a game to help you study, primarily word problems, but that's not all that will be on the test.
Don't forget it's not just the answer that I'm looking for, I need to see your strategy. Specifically, I want to see you:
Beginning on Tuesday, we'll start a new unit: Data Management. Be sure you bring some graph paper with you because you'll need it.
Don't forget it's not just the answer that I'm looking for, I need to see your strategy. Specifically, I want to see you:
- identify what you're comparing (off to the side, maybe in square brackets)
- show the proportion that is listed in the question, with the missing number written as x
- show the strategy you use to solve for the missing value (either scale factor or cross multiplication)
Beginning on Tuesday, we'll start a new unit: Data Management. Be sure you bring some graph paper with you because you'll need it.
MMQ Results (October 24)
If you didn't score 70% or more, then bring your lunch and we'll work on it together tomorrow :) The unit test is around the corner and I want to be sure you're all confident going into it. Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it!
MMQ Results (from October 18)
Please bring a lunch if you scored a mark less than 70%. I really want to be sure that you understand how to use scale factor and how to write ratios before building on what we've already learned.

Week of October 21
Last Friday's MMQ results will be posted soon. The retake will be tomorrow at lunch. If you did not pass, please be sure to do the retake as the information taught this week relies heavily on your understanding on last week's lessons.
There will be another MMQ this Thursday. We'll be looking at percent problems and more ratio problems. I'll be going over how to read math problems to identify what the question is really asking by looking for the clues present in each question.

Week of October 15
I hope you've had a great Thanksgiving weekend.
This week we'll be starting a new unit, but we're still on our first duotang. Remember to bring your calculator to classes this week. I'll begin by reviewing what you learned in grade 6 and then connecting that with what we've already done this year. On Friday you'll be having an MMQ.
Your unit tests (the ones you wrote last Thursday) are marked, but I'm still waiting for a few student to write it. Once they do, I'll give them back to you. I expect you to bring them home and have your parents sign them before you return them to me.

MMQ Results - October 7
Here are the results of the MMQ we wrote in class today. Click on your class and search for your number. YOU MAY NEED TO HIT REFRESH IF YOU NOTICE THAT THE DATE IS FROM THE LAST MMQ.
The retake will take place tomorrow (TUESDAY) at lunch. If you did not get 70% or more, please be prepared to stay in at lunch time to rewrite the MMQ. Pack your food that day, because there will not be enough time for you to buy your lunch. We'll go over the test together and work on strategies to improve so you're better prepared.
- If you scored at or above 70%, congratulations! You move up the Math Mountain!
- If you see an "A", then you were absent and will write the test tomorrow (or the first day you return).
- If you see an "R", then your mark was less than 50% (I never post these grades).
Week of October 7
Assuming that school isn't canceled this week, you'll have an MMQ on Monday on Order of Operations. By Wednesday, there will be a Unit Test on everything that we've covered for this entire unit. If you're absent on either of those days, you'll need to write the missed evaluation the next day.
I'd recommend that you start reviewing concepts this weekend, especially ones that you've had trouble with this. Remember, I'm always available to help - I'm just an email away :)

Week of September 30
The MMQ that was originally scheduled for Friday will be on Monday (tomorrow). The MMQ will be on Powers and Square Roots. Be sure to have your calculator with you.
The rest of this week will be focussed on Order of Operations, which will include brackets, powers and square roots. You'll have another MMQ the following Monday (October 7), strictly on Order of Operations.

Week of September 23
This week we'll go over some tips and tricks to multiplying and dividing without a calculator, using mental math. This technique can be used even when you don't forget your calculator. Human error leads to calculator errors, but if you use mental math to give you, at the very least, an estimate of what the solution should be, you'll know if the answer on the calculator is reasonable.
We'll also go over squares and square roots. These are important to understand before we expand our knowledge of order of operations next week.

MMQ Results
As you know, I wasn't at school on Friday when you wrote your first MMQ. So I won't be posting your results this time, because you don't know your secret MMQ numbers yet. Instead, I'll return the quizzes on Tuesday and we'll do the retake in class. Unfortunately, the results were pretty dismal. Many students scored below 70% and would need to do the rewrite. I'll do it with EVERYONE because everyone can benefit from a refresher.
I'll tell you your assigned secret MMQ# during the second MMQ.

Math Duotang Organization
In case you missed it:
Math Duotang #1
Math Duotang #2
Math Duotang #3
Math Duotang #4
After I've checked them on Tuesday, leave these extra 3 duotangs either at home somewhere you won’t lose it, or in your locker (be sure that it doesn’t get wet, dirty, damaged, etc…). Hopefully this will keep you organized for the year :)
Math Duotang #1
- On the outside of the duotang, print the subject (Math), your name (Capitalize the first letter of your first name and your last name), your class (either 7A, 7B, or 7C), and number your duotang (1/4)
- On the inside, the first page should be the Syllabus
- Now insert your first divider. Label it “Factors & Exponents”
- Next, insert lined paper which you'll use for your notes, homework, and questions (YOU DON'T HAVE THESE YET... BUT INSERT THEM IN ORDER AS YOU RECEIVE THEM)
- Then the second divider can be inserted. Label it “Ratio, Rate & %”
- Lastly, the third divider, which you’ll label “Data Management”
Math Duotang #2
- On the outside of the duotang, print the subject (Math), your name (Capitalize the first letter of your first name and your last name), your class (either 7A or 7B or 7C), and number the duotang (2/4)
- On the inside, insert your first divider. Label it “Patterns”
- Then the second divider can be inserted. Label it “2D Measurement”
- Lastly, the third divider, which you’ll label “Integers: Addition & Subtraction”
Math Duotang #3
- On the outside of the duotang, print the subject (Math), your name (Capitalize the first letter of your first name and your last name), your class (either 7A or 7B or 7C), and number the duotang (3/4)

Week of September 16
This week, I'll go over how to organize your duotangs. On Monday I'll be expecting to see all of your math supplies. Please see my "HOME" page if you've forgotten what you need. I've handed out a syllabus for math (I've also posted a PDF below), which I'll also expect you to bring on Monday. We'll be spending a class organizing your duotangs (please, please, pleeeeeeeeease don't forget to bring all of them to class this week). Students who miss this lesson will need to see at lunch on the day they return.
On Tuesday will be our first formal lesson; we will review some work from grade 6 and outline my expectations on homework completion (btw, you'll have math homework nearly every day). I'll teach you about factors and multiples and I'll show you an easy trick to naming all the factors of a number and by week's end, we'll have our first MMQ!
It's a busy week. If you're feeling overwhelmed, please come and speak to me and I'll do my best to help you out :)
